American Pharmacists Association Headquarters, now LEED Gold certified.
The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) headquarters in Washington, D.C., has achieved the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Gold certification Core and Shell of its new headquarters building on the National Mall.
“We are delighted to receive LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council,” says APhA chief executive officer and executive vice president Thomas E. Menighan. “Our building was designed to be a high performance green building that provides our employees, tenants, and visitors with a healthy work environment and reduces the impact on the environment.”

Low-flow fixtures contributed to 42 percent water savings. All of the parking is underground to reduce the heat-island effect, and there is reserved parking for low-emitting and fuel-efficient vehicles. The facility also provides bicycle storage and shower facilities. Half of the undeveloped site is landscaped with indigenous plants; water-efficient landscaping systems and drought-tolerant plants reduce water use by 50 percent. The headquarters also boasts increased ventilation and outdoor air-monitoring systems, optimized energy performance and metering systems, energy-efficient Gen2 elevator systems, and exterior lighting features that reduce light pollution.
