Eco-luxury has reached a new level in Los Angeles with the opening of Recess for Your Hands and Feet nail salon. A team from Arch-Interiors Design Group Inc., Beverly Hills, Calif., designed the 2,000-square-foot (186-m2) space while keeping environmental concerns at the forefront of their minds. To create an elegant, yet fun and relaxing eco-friendly space, recycled-quartz countertops, low-VOC paints and resin floors, wood and glass wall coverings, and a reclaimed school sink were used. The drywall is formaldehyde free and all construction waste was recycled. Skylights add natural light to the salon and all artificial lighting is connected to photo cells or motion sensors so they turn off when there is sufficient natural light or the room is unoccupied.

A tankless gas water heater provides hot water, and doors are made with solid core panel from 100 percent recovered agriculture fiber. Other features include wallpaper with water-based inks and cork flooring in the built-in banquette for pedicures. In another testament to its environmental commitment, Recess for Your Hands and Feet provides nontoxic services by using its own line of organic soaks, lotions, scrubs and essential oils, as well as nontoxic nail polishes and nail treatments. Naturally antimicrobial bamboo- and cotton-blend towels are manufactured using wind power.

Recess for Your Hands and Feet is in the process of applying for the Washington, D.C.-based U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED for Commercial Interiors certification. Much of the salon’s equipment is Energy Star rated by the Washington-based U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Not only is the nail salon earning industry recognition for its environmental attributes, it also has gained celebrity prominence. Environmental Media Association, Los Angeles, and Live Earth, Beverly Hills, have used the space for their Live Earth Concert. Jessica Alba, who appeared in “Fantastic Four;” Alicia Silverstone, who appeared in “Clueless;” and Kate Walsh, star of ABC’s “Private Practice,” have received treatments at the salon. Recess for Your Hands and Feet is a prime example of how green building is cro ssing all industries.
