Wood and forestry folks have reason to celebrate this week: At the White House this week, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack announced a total of $1 million in funding to support innovation in wood and forest products and their use in high-rise buildings. As reported by our sister publication ProSales, at the White House Rural Council Workshop "Building with Wood: Jobs and the Environment," Vilsack announced that the U.S. Forest Service has pledges $1 million to spur innovation in wood and forest projects, while the Binational Softwood Lumber Council has pledged $1 million in funding for a tall wood building competition to accelerate the use of wood in high-rise structures. Vilsak also announced a partnership between the U.S. Department of Agriculture and WoodWorks, an organization that provides resources and technical support regarding the design of commercial and multifamily wood buildings.
