The third public comment period for the proposed 2012 updates to the USGBC's LEED green building certification system will begin on March 1, 2012. Comments will be accepted until March 20. The third public comment documents, including technical refinements, scorecards, and responses to public comments from previous public comment periods, will be available at starting March 1. The most recent public comment period ran from Aug. 1 through Sept. 14, 2011.

The third draft of the rating system has been refined to address technical stringency, measurement and performance tools, and user experience. LEED credit requirements have been rewritten to better align with documentation already required in the AEC community. In addition, modified language in the system is intended to increase flexibility and make it easier for the international community to adopt LEED 2012.

In late 2011, Scot Horst, USGBC senior vice presidnet of LEED, spoke with ECO-STRUCTURE about the on-going evolution of LEED 2012 and some of the more prominent issues under discussion in the proposed updates. The full article, from ECO-STRUCTURE's November/December 2011 issue, can be found here
