UC Berkeley, School of Law

Rather than expand the footprint of Berkeley Law laterally or block views by building up, the designers went underground. From the street, the addition appears as a transparent pavilion.

The west courtyard now feature flexible café and lounge furnishings, along with sliding glass walls that allow the space to expand as needed and to transform quickly from individual study space to group and event space.

In the center of the project, the new and old structures are connected via a large glass volume. Slender columns travel from the cornice of the original structure, through the glass enclosure, and down into the new reading room.

The subterranean library is rich in daylight thanks to a series of skylights.
