A variety of new insulation products, from batts to boards to loose-fill, provide a combination of thermal efficiency and sound abatement, allowing builders and contractors to create more efficient and quieter interior environments.

Perimeter Plus loose-fill fiberglass blown-in insulation from Knauf, designed to work with the Blow-in-Blanket System, provides R-values up to R-15 in 2x4 walls and up to R-23 in 2x6 walls. Blown behind Perimeter Plus netting into closed cavities, the system fills gaps and voids and will not settle, the maker says. Perimeter Plus is certified as a low-chemical-emitting and low-particle-emitting product by the Greenguard Environmental Institute. 800.825.4434. www.knaufinsulation.com.

Engineered to decrease sound transmission between rooms, Noise Suppression Technologies' Model FWC Flexible Wall/Ceiling Composite combines two 1-inch-thick sound-absorbing fiberglass batts separated by and laminated to a dense barrier membrane composed of barium sulfate–loaded vinyl for use as an internal component in standard stud walls. Standard 54-inch-wide rolls are available. The insulation provides sound transmission coefficient ratings up to 27, the manufacturer says. 614.258.4455. www.noisesuppression.com.

Applegate BoraSpray cellulose insulation incorporates natural boric acid rather than man-made boric acid to provide a sulfate-free, all-borate product to the market, says the manufacturer, Applegate Insulation. The borate treatment protects the insulation from insects and decay. The stabilized insulation offers an R-value of about 3.8–3.9 per inch, depending on density and depth of application. 800.627. 7536. www.applegateinsulation.com.

American Micro Industries' Quiet Batt acoustical and thermal insulation batts are made from 80 percent recycled content and do not release any skin-irritating fibers during installation, the company says. The Class A fire-rated product is available in R-13 and R-19 batts in 16- and 24-inch widths. The batts friction-fit between both wood and metal studs. 800.558.2058. www.soundprooffoam.com.

Faced with the manufacturer's breathable MemBrain film, DryRight fiberglass insulation from CertainTeed is engineered to reduce the risk of mold and mildew growth. In moist, humid interior conditions, the film's pores open to let moisture vapor escape the wall cavity; when indoor humidity is low, the pores close to prevent vapor transmission. DryRight comes in R-13 and R-19 batts and rolls with a friction-fit design. 800.233.8990. www.certainteed.com.

Owens Corning's Raft-R-Mate attic rafter vents now incorporate an optional air stop/insulation block feature. A perforation in the vent creates a panel that can be flipped down during installation to prevent “wind wash” from blowing through it and pushing insulation away from the house's perimeter; to prevent insulation from covering eave and soffit vents; and to eliminate the need to install a second product for these purposes. 800.438.7465. www.owenscorning.com.

Manufactured from a glass-fiber-reinforced polyisocyanurate foam core laminated between an aluminum facer on one side and an embossed white acrylic-coated aluminum facer on the other, easy-to-handle Thermax White Finish Insulation Boards are ideal for crawl spaces, walls, ceilings, and interior basement applications. The product delivers an R-value of 6.5 at 1-inch thickness, says the manufacturer, Dow Building & Construction, and can be used to create a semi-finished appearance. 866.583.2583. www.dow.com.
