Over at Green Building Law Update, Stuart Kaplow has the scoop on new legislation that will affect residential building in Key West, Fla. In November, the City Commission passed an ordinance requiring LEED Certified or Florida Green Building Coalition Bronze certification as a prerequisite for residential construction. However, it's up for debate as to what size of an impact this will have on green building communities as Key West's development is limited based on hurricane evacuation capacity on Key West roads. Key West has not received new residential units for development since 1993, according to Kaplow, and the current application process allows for just 91 new residential units annually.
