Indulging in the surroundings of the pristine Swiss Alps, relaxing with daily spa treatments, and skiing down tranquil and beautiful mountains are daily activities at Whitepod in Les Cerniers, Switzerland. Founder Sofia de Meyer, who grew up in the Alps, was inspired to create Whitepod so she could share her ecological lifestyle and love of nature with others. She also wanted to provide a haven of magnificence and serenity to people who wish to restore their mind, body and spirit while leaving a small footprint.
There are two places to stay at Whitepod: the camp and refuge. The camp sits at an altitude of 4,604 feet (1400 m). It consists of 10 pavilion pods, which are dome-shaped white tents; a spa pod; and main lodge. The pavilion pods have 538 square feet (50 m2) of space, including a bedroom and lounge area. Only a wood-burning fireplace and gas lamps provide heat and light. Each pod houses only two guests. Because the pods are set on wooden platforms, they easily can be removed, leaving a very small footprint. Their white-canvas shells blend in with the snow-covered environment. The spa pod has two treatment rooms and therapists offer relaxation with a variety of massages, including classic, aromatherapy, deep tissue and a traditional Indian ayuryedic massage. The main lodge houses the dining room, bar/lounge and fitness center.

The refuge sits at an altitude of 5,919 feet (1800 m). Up to 60 guests can stay at the refuge and enjoy a private ski resort, daily campfires, morning yoga and traditional Swiss breakfasts around an open chimney. Daily activities for all guests include guided snowshoe tours to learn about local wildlife, dog sledding, paragliding, guided back-country skiing and a picnic dinner with a night descent back to camp.
Whitepod maintains strict ecological principles; the resort is designed to complement the environment while providing comfort. Only the main lodge and mountain refuge have electricity and bathrooms, limiting energy and water consumption. Guests and employees have easy access to recycling, and the resort’s use of area suppliers boosts the local economy.
Whitepod was the winner of the Responsible Tourism Award in 2005; the award is sponsored by responsibletravel.com. The resort is a member of the Luxury Camps and Lodges of the World (www.lclworld.com) because it combines luxury with sustainability. Whitepod provides a calm and peaceful way to experience nature and relaxation while maintaining ecological principles.
